Top E rated video games for kids 2011

Note: This list is from Christmas 2011 – for my list of top E rated video games for kids for Christmas 2012 click here.

Only 33 days until Christmas!  While the Mature crowd is playing Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, you need some ideas for kids’ games.

Here’s my latest list on the top selling and top rated video games that are appropriate for kids – all with an ESRB rating of E or E 10+. Everything is sorted by console, to make it easier for you.

Ratings are in parenthesis after the game title – for example Super Mario Galaxy 2 (10) – was rated 10.

— 3DS —

Released earlier this year, the 3DS has an ever growing number of titles available.  The price of $180 for the handheld console itself is an amazing deal, and the number of titles available have finally reached the point where buying a 3DS makes sense.  I’ve played Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for hours on our 3DS, and although I have the Nintendo64 version memorized, it’s a fresh and fun experience, a delight to the eyes, to play it on the 3DS.  (You can turn off the 3D, for non 3D games.)

Some hot gift ideas for your 3DS gamer are:  DSi Points, a gaming headset or headphones, DSi SD card, a car charger, and a sturdy / stylish 3DS case.

— DS —

The Nintendo DS handheld is a workhorse console with a huge number of inexpensive kid friendly titles.  The DSi goes for $150, while the more popular DSi XL (with the larger screen) goes for $170; you can also find great bundle pack deals.

(Note: If you have a lot of older Nintendo games, keep in mind, the 3DS and DSi have one game cartridge slot and play only the smaller, SD card sized games; the older DS model has two slots and plays the smaller, SD card sized games AND the larger 2 inch wide by 1 inch tall older games that also fit in the older SP model. If you need help, just ask in the comments.)

Some hot gift ideas for your 3DS gamer are:  DSi Points, a gaming headset or headphones, DSi SD card, a car charger, and a DS / DSi XL case.

— PC —

Kid friendly PC games can be bought at a store, or you can play games online – an mmorpg, like Maplestory – or through a games portal, like Steam.  If you have a Nexon fan (Maplestory, Mabinogi) your gamer would love a Karma Koin card.  If your gamer is member of Steam, while there are no Steam Wallet cards that you can buy in a store, you can buy online using credit cards, PayPal, or a number of online payment options. You can also join Steam and gift them to your gamer.  Another great gift idea is the hot new game Minecraft – go online and buy the code, and then present the code to your gamer. (Check first, they may already have this wildly popular game…)

Some hot gift ideas for your PC gamer are:  in game credits, and a gaming headset. Headsets are almost a necessity for older kids, as they like to Skype each other while playing; another benefit is then you’re not constantly saying TURN THAT DOWN! If you have a Minecraft fan, check out all the Minecraft tees and loot at Jinx; we’ll also be getting some Happy Socks this year.

Top selling

  2. Dungeon Defenders (download)

My earlier list of top esrb rated E / E 10+ video games for kids from April 2011 can be found here. For help with games, faqs, and walkthroughs – check out For in-depth reviews, ratings, previews, and release dates –  Ratings are from  (Although, I highly disagree with their 7.5/10 rating of the newly released The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which received a perfect 10/10 rating from IGN. I may have to start using another source for ratings… #blasphemy)

Good luck and happy holiday shopping!
