The new Shaman King 2012: Zero Story

Note: Please check the bottom of this post for updates and links to English translations of omakes!

Hiroyuki Takei’s manga series Shaman King is being revived, starting with the November 10 Jump X release of an all new 44-page manga one shot about Yoh Asakura, called Zero Story.

While we’re waiting for the English translation of Zero Story, be sure to check out this new video on Anime News Network – it’s a song called “Osorezan Revoir”, sung by Mugumi Hayashibara (voice actress for Anna), and featuring an original illustration of Anna by Hiroyuki Takei.  And you MUST read the touching backstory on how this video came to be.

According to Anime News Network:

“The “Osōrezan Revoir” video was created to celebrate the revival of the Shaman King manga with a new 44-page story in Jump X [Kai]‘s fifth volume on November 10. The manga short will depict a previously untold “zero story” about the main character Yō Asakura. According to the magazine, the manga short will be the first part in a series of short manga stories and lead up to a “Big Project” next spring.”

This one shot will, according to Shaman King Nation, tell the story of “Yoh Asakura leaving his hometown of Izumo and heading to Tokyo for the first time, as well as helping the spirit of a dead child pass on”.

Much more information, along with downloadable wallpapers of Takei’s illustration of Anna are available on the JumpX website (in Japanese).

If you can read Japanese, check out natalie.mu, who posted this amazing Yoh Asakura cover of the November 10 issue of JumpX:

For more information on Shaman King, check out my earlier review here.

The big question is, what’s coming in March 2012 – will it be manga or anime or a movie or something else?  Patch Cafe’s site says the “big project” starting in April 2012 will be “Shaman King Flowers will turn into Mankin’s [Shaman King's] official sequel and will be serialized in Jump Kai starting in April!”  I’m still holding out, hoping there will be a new anime. Rumor says there may be an announcement in December…

I’ll post the English scanlations / translation of Zero Story as soon as it’s available…  See below for updates!  Also, apparently the Jump Kai 5 issue is selling out

For now, the best place I can find English info on Zero Story is Patch Cafe – check out this Shaman King Zero 01 Review post by Dit; the review has both a summary of the story with pics, AND a spoiler free review.  Here’s a sample:

Chapter 4 just came out. Chapter 5 will be out in March – that will be the last Zero Story one shot. Then, starts Shaman King Flowers in April.

Also, PatchCafe has:

There’s also a cover shot of Shaman King Flowers main characters Hana Asakura (Yoh and Anna’s son) and Itako no Anna the 3rd. Looks an awful lot like Yoh and Anna with blonde hair… o.o

UPDATE 4/17/2012:

The last Shaman King Zero Story chapter / omake 5 Tamagawa Under the Bridge (Gag of New York) is now available in English on Mangastream!

Interestingly enough, the first 18 pages are of Hao and his group, and the last 4 pages and color cover are of Chocolove.

Catch it quick, as Mangastream keeps their translations up for a short time, with no archives.  Pic from Mangastream:

I love this page of Hao Asakura – pulling all the “strings” attached to Yoh, Ren, Horohoro, Lyserg, and Chocolove – pulling them all toward their then-future destiny at the Shaman Fight.

Don’t forget to visit PatchCafe and check out their Chapter 5 discussion.

At the end of the chapter there is this page, with color art of Hana Asakura, Itako no Anna the 3rd, and a new evil “Asakura” with bandages, an umbrella, and an eyepatch – emblazoned with Hao’s star emblem. Flowers starts next issue of Jump Kai – April 10th!

I’m going to put up a new post to cover everything Shaman King: Flowers.  Lastly, I leave you with this:

Shame on you and all you stand for! The Shaman King manga is 100000000000000000000000 times better than the anime. That is not even an opinion, that is a fact.

I agree with you that the Shaman King manga is way better than the anime. That’s my personal opinion. Some people only like to watch anime, though, and don’t want to take the time to read the manga. The anime story is good, but not as good as the manga story – they are completely DIFFERENT stories, which I talk about on my post here. If you only watch the anime, and don’t read the manga, you miss out on Anna’s backstory, Metamune, Hao’s backstory (why is he evil?), the 5 legendary heroes, a way better ending, and much more.
